1855 FFQ Unperforated

Click the picture above to go to a new page of information re this issue.

New Zealand stamps of 1855. These were the first NZ stamps, the Full Face Queen, or 'Chalon Heads' issue. They all have the same layout, but with varying colors and values. Originally only 3 values were printed, the 1d red, 2d blue and 1s green. These were printed in England, then sent with the plates and a supply of paper to NZ, where further printings were made, and other values later added. Inscribed with 'Postage' these stamps were not perforated, being cut from a sheet as needed. In a busy Post Office the cutting was often rushed, so many stamps had irregular shapes. (As in our picture of NZ07 below.) Be aware that some 1862 perforated stamps were trimmed down to try and pass them off as a more valuable unperforated variety.
