1882 Duty Fiscals
Issued on 1st April 1882, these and the earlier issued Fiscal stamps were permitted to be used for postal purposes as supplies of usual 'Postage' stamps ran short. Normally these 'Duty' stamps were used to show the charges collected for land transfers and other transactions where duties had to be paid.
Values above £1 are known to have also been postally used. It is possible the 12s 6d purple may not have been issued until 1913. Until someone more expert than us clarifies the matter, it is listed here, and under 1913.
These stamps were designed by W B Hudson and printed at the Government Printing Office, Wellington, size 24mm x 40mm, 60 stamps to a sheet. Surface printed, typography. NZ and Star watermark. From 1903 the watermark was sideways.
